SPEECH BY HIS EXCELLENCY YOUSEF ZURGANI, LIBYAN AMBASSADOR
Ladies and Gentlemen
Thank you for honouring the festivities on the occasion of the second anniversary of the glorious revolution of the 17th February when one of the most formidable dictatorships in modern history was overthrown. For a period of 41 years, the Libyan people suffered from repression, persecution, murders, maltreatment and deprivations. Other countries also suffered at the hands of the violence and machinations of this regime. But the providence of God, the courage of the revolutionaries and the help of brothers and friends were stronger than the tyrant. The regime and its symbols fell. Freedom and justice triumphed over the entire Libyan land.
The people are celebrating this anniversary and thousands of citizens from all regions of Libya have come out onto the streets to express their joy and loyalty to the innumerable martyrs, injured and those who disappeared without trace, chanting and promising that they will continue the journey to defend national unity and construct a law abiding state, in respect of human rights and in opposition to all the sceptics amongst the adherents of the old regime.
Modern-day Libya in transition from revolution to statehood calls upon all brothers and friends from the European Union to participate in the construction of a New Libya, assisting its institutions in order to create a broad and stable foundation for cooperation, based on mutual respect and common interests.
I would like finally to thank all the countries, institutions, international and regional organisations which took part and contributed to the defence of the civilian population and the liberation of Libya. I would like here to note the position of Bulgaria with regard to the Libyan revolution. Bulgaria was one of the first countries to recognise the Interim Council and offered political and logistical support to the revolution of 17th February. We would be pleased to see the return of Bulgarian companies and Bulgarian specialists in a new Libya, as well as the establishment of new aspects for cooperation in this important period in the history of the Libyan people.
